SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN SOCIAL STUDIES MOTIVATION LEVELS


The word motivation means incentive and to motivate in the Turkish Language Association's Current Turkish Dictionary (2019). According to Selçuk (1999), the motivation is to force the organism to make certain reactions and as a result learn or do things. The aim of this study is to determine the motivation levels of secondary school students in social studies course. This study was conducted as a quantitative research and it is a screening model. In this study, questionnaire technique was used to collect data. The sample of the study consisted of 300 students (153 females and 147 males) from 5th, 6th and 7th grade students in secondary schools in four different districts (Bağlar, Kayapınar, Sur and Yenişehir) in Diyarbakır in the 2018-2019 academic year. Participants were given the form of motivation scale of social studies course developed by Tahiroğlu and Aktepe (2015). Participants were given 40 minutes to complete the form. Quantitative data collected from scale form were analyzed by SPSS 22 analysis program and analyzed by percentage and frequency technique. According to the findings obtained from this study; 96% of the participants stated that they were not willing to work with their parents and teachers, but 95% of the participants stated that the social studies course was not boring and 95% of the participants did not spend any time in social studies course. 39.7% of the participants stated that they wanted to be successful in social studies course in order for their families and teachers to appreciate themselves (well done) and 41% of the participants had more important lessons than bilgiler social studies course.. Therefore, I spend less time on social studies. 45% of the participants stated that it is very enjoyable to work with my friends on social studies. As a result, it is understood that the motivation levels of the social studies course of secondary school students are generally high, but studies should be conducted in areas where the motivation levels are low.
