The aim of this study is to determine the knowledge and thoughts of the 6th, 7th and 8th grade students about the recycling of waste and depending on this purpose, the study was carried out in the screening model.Within the scope of the study, a questionnaire was applied to the participants at one time and the data collected from this data collection tool were evaluated with content analysis. The sample of the study consists of 61 girls and 87 boys (N = 148) students attending 6th, 7th and 8th grades of a secondary school in Kartal district of İstanbul in 2016-2017 academic year. A form consisting of five open and closed ended questions prepared by the researchers was used to obtain the data. The first two questions in the questionnaire were prepared to gather the students' knowledge about recycling and three other questions to determine their thoughts on this issue. After obtaining the data, the student responses were analyzed with the codes generated by the researchers and the students' knowledge and thoughts about the recycling concept were revealed. According to the findings obtained from the study, it was seen that the majority of the students had the knowledge and positive thoughts about the recycling symbol and meaning of it, and the environmental consciousness increase as the grade level increases. This is a promising result for future generations to create a positive attitude towards the environment and to raise awareness. However, with the question of where they have seen this symbol, very few students answered the textbook. They also stated that the recycle bin was not used too much by their families. Based on the results of the study, suggestions for future studies are presented.
