PERCEPTIONS OF PRIMARY SCHOOL STUDENTS ON SOLIDARITY VALUE: A METAFOR ANALYSIS


Today, the concept of values is a matter of great emphasis. One of the values given in the social studies curriculum is the solidarity value. Solidarity is defined as the fact that individuals who form a community, a society, are connected to each other by the unity of emotion, thought and interest and support each other in each issue. The aim of this study is to determine the metaphorical perceptions of primary school students towards solidarity value. In this study, a qualitative research method is used. The participants of the study consisted of 148 male and 252 female students in 4th grade in Afyonkarahisar. The data were collected by using metaphor method from qualitative data collection methods. The opinion reporting form, in which “Solidarity is …… Because……” is written, was used as the data collection tool. In this study, content analysis was used to analyze the data. The collected data were carried out in five stages: coding and sorting, sample metaphor list creation, category determination, validity and reliability, and converting and interpreting metaphors into quantitative data. As a result of the analysis of the data, the metaphors developed by the primary school students on the value of solidarity were grouped into 4 categories under the categories of; Solidarity in terms of human values, solidarity in terms of national values, solidarity with institutions and organizations and other categories. It was concluded that primary school students produced 29 different metaphors related to solidarity value. When the metaphors developed by the students about the value of solidarity were examined, it was determined that they produced metaphors in the category of solidarity in terms of the most human values. In the category of solidarity in terms of human values, it is seen that they include the most aid, unity and togetherness, friendship metaphors.
