O, modern sosyolojinin kurucucsu olarak bilinmektedir. Weber sosyolojinin konusunu sosyal eylem olarak niteler. Weber’e göre; sosyoloji sosyal eylemleri yorumlayarak anlama amacındadır. Sosyoloji bir sosyal eylem bilimidir. Sosyal eylemler akılcı davranışlar ile duygusal ve geleneksel davranışları içerir. Weber sosyal eylemleri anlama yönetemi aracılığıyla kavramayı amaçlamaktadır. O, toplumsal konularda kavramları anlamak ve açıklamak için iki yöntem kullanır: İdeal tip analizi ve tarihi tip analiz. İdeal tipler gerçek değildir, fakat gerçekle ilişkileri vardır. İdeal tipler hayali bir rasyonelleştirmenin ürünüdür. Tarihi tip analiz ise tarih ve sosyolojinin ortak çalışma konularına sahip olduğunu ileri sürer. Weber ayrıca sosyolojinin siyasal ve ahlaki değerlere ilişkin görüş belirtmesini yasaklar. Ona göre; sosyoloji nesnellik ve değer tarafsızlığı içinde hareket etmelidir. Weber sosyolojik açıdan insan davranışlarının farklı özellikler taşıdığını belirtmektedir. Bu nedenle insan davranışları hakkında genel yasalara ulaşılamayacağını öne sürmektedir. O, dini olaylar ile ekonomik olaylar arasında da bir bağ kurmaktadır. Ona göre; Prostestan ahlâk bireyciliği, sıkı çalışma ve disiplini, rasyonel davranış ve özgüveni teşvik etmektedir. Bu durum kapitalizmin gelişiminde önemli bir rol oynamaktadır. Çalışma Weber’in sosyoloji kuramını ve sosyal bilimler metodolojisini teorik açıdan incelemektedir. Bu kapsamda çalışmada literatür taraması esas alınmıştır.
