Tarihin bilinmeyen dönemlerinden itibaren nar, sağlık kaynağı olmasının yanında, büyük dinlerde, dini kitaplarda, mitolojik öykülerde adına sıkça rastlanan bir meyvedir. Bu sözlü gelenek ürünleri içerisinde özellikle masallarda adı sıkça geçmektedir. Masallarda nar bir bilmecenin cevabı, çocuksuz eşler için çocuk sahibi olabilmeyi sağlayıcı sihirli bir meyve, sevgililer için bir sınama aracı, maddi ve manevi hediyeler kazandıran bir araç, hastalıkları iyileştirici sırlı bir ilaç bazen de talihsizlikle sonuçlanan bir hadisenin kaynağı olarak işlenmiştir.
