Zihniyet, bir grubun örtük referans sistemi olarak tanımlanmaktadır. Zihniyetin kendisini gösterdiği somut veriler davranışlar, fikirler, yaşam tarzı, ahlak gibi çok geniş alanlarda ortaya çıkmakta, dolayısıyla bu alanlar incelendiğinde o grubun zihniyet yapısının çerçevesi, Ülgener’in tabiriyle bir “portresi” çizilebilmektedir. Zihniyet okumalarının yapıldığı önemli alanlardan bir diğeri ise o ülkenin edebiyatı, resmi, sineması gibi sanat eserleri olarak saptanmaktadır. Sanat eserleri özelde sinema, içinde bulunduğu toplumunu bir yandan yansıtmakta diğer yandan belirli şartlarda etkileme gücünü elinde bulundurmaktadır. Ayrıca sanatçı, içinde bulunduğu toplumun ve zamanın zihniyetini bünyesinde barındırmakta, dolayısıyla filmler ait olduğu toplumun zihniyet yapısının özelliklerini taşımaktadır. Zihniyet okumaları ile bu yapının özellikleri saptanabilmekte, çağa ait zihniyet yapısı ortaya çıkarılabilmektedir. Çalışma, Kabadayı (Ömer Vargı, 2007) adlı film özelinde bir zihniyet okuması yapmayı amaçlamaktadır. Filmin analizinde sosyolojik yöntem kullanılmakta iken, kuramsal temel antropoloji, sosyoloji ve tarih bilimlerine dayanmaktadır. Kabadayı, anlatısındaki eski yeni karşıtlığında Anadolu toplumu zihinsel yapısına ait pek çok unsuru bünyesinde barındırmaktadır. Sonuç olarak, filmsel anlatı çağa ve topluma ait zihinsel yapının izlerini taşımaktadır.

Mentality is defined as the implicit reference system of a group. Concrete data that mentality shows itself in reveal in wide areas like attitudes, opinions, life style, morals; therefore, the frame of the mentality in that group, its “portrait” like Ülgener said, can be described when these areas are examined. It is confirmed that another one of the significant areas mentality reading made is the artistic production of that country such as literature, art and cinema. Artistic production especially cinema, reflects the society that they live in; on the other hand, they hold the influence in certain conditions. Furthermore, artists incorporate the mentality of the time and society that they live in; therefore, movies have the characteristic of the mentality in the society where they belong to. The characteristics of this frame can be confirmed with mentality reading, the mentality in that era can be revealed. It is aimed to make mentality reading in the movie called Kabadayı in this study. Sociological method is applied in the film analysis, and theoretical structure is based on anthropology, sociology and history. The movie called Kabadayı incorporates numerous elements, belonging to the habit of mind in Anatolian society, in the reciprocity of ancient and neo in its narration. Consequently, filmic narration bears the stamp of mentality that belongs to the era and society.
