Climatic Characteristics At The Central Uplands And Surrounding Areas In The Amanus Mountains


The area under investigation, which corresponds to the central uplands and the surrounding areas in the Amanus Mountains, resides between the Iskenderun Bay and the Antakya-Maras graben in the Adana Subregion of the Mediterranean Region. The location is under the sole effect of Tropical air masses during summer whereas during winter the area serves as a meeting point for Tropical and Polar air masses. Generally speaking, frontal activities associated with the Secondary Mediterranean Front and the local pressure conditions during the winter and the collective circulation between the Azores Anticyclone and the Basra low pressure center and the local pressure conditions during the summer period are the indicative parameters along with the topographical characteristics of the region in establishing the climatic conditions of the study area. The mass of mountains, which is roughly situated in S-N direction in parallel to the coastal line, constitute a significant barrier against the effects of the marine climate to penetrate towards inland. The Amanus mountain range, rising in between different local pressure systems caused by the differences in warming between the terrestrial areas in the east and the Mediterranean in the west, institute the establishment of two physically not very distant but climatically very different environs. Despite the lowlands in the study area being under the influence of the characteristic Mediterranean climate and the highlands being under the influence of the climate characteristics of the Mediterranean Mountain Range, substantial differences can also be observed in terms of climatic characteristics within very short distances within the area, mainly due to the presence of the effect of the geographical settings in different parts on the planetary factors. The Mediterranean thermal regime is dominant over the area of study. Considerable differences in the precipitation regime exist between the eastern and the western facade of the mountains in the study region. The stations situated in the east reflect the characteristics of the Mediterranean precipitation regime whereas the data collected in the stations located in the west displayed differences in magnitude of precipitation from the Mediterranean regime during the summer and winter periods. The Amanus Mountains have high wind potential in Turkey. There are wind turbines situated near Bahce, Hasanbeyli and Belen within the area of study.
