Modern dönemde sanat ifadesi tek bir biçimde olmaktan çıkmış, disiplinlerarası bir hal almıştır. Bu bağlamda özellikle sanat ve tasarım alanlarının birlikteliği ve bilimin katkısıyla biçimlenen yeni deneyimler artmaktadır. Çağdaş sanatın doğuşu ile birlikte bu yeni üretim ve ifade biçimlerinde mekân önemli bir rol oynayarak, izleyiciye farklı deneyimler sunmaktadır. Bu çalışmadaki amaç, çağdaş sanatın ifade biçimleri ile birlikte renk-ışık-mekânı konu alan sanatçılardan biri olan James Turrell’in çalışmalarını aktarmaktır. Çalışmada betimsel araştırma yöntem olarak kullanılmış ve konu ile ilgili literatür taraması yapılarak, veriler nitel analiz yöntemiyle değerlendirilmiştir. Yapılan araştırmalar sonucunda, Turrell’in özellikle hem sanat, hem tasarım, hem de bilimin ışığında yapmış olduğu çalışmalar incelenerek, mekân, ışık ve renk kullanımı ile oluşturduğu önemli örnekler üzerinde durulmuştur. Turrell çalışmalarında doğanın sanatı ile olan etkileşimini ön plana çıkararak yeni birer mekân oluşturmakta ve bu mekânlarda ışık ve renk ile oluşturduğu etkilerle izleyiciye mekâna dair yeni deneyimler sunmaktadır. Çalışmaları sadece izlenen değil aynı zamanda yaşanan birer yapıt haline gelmektedir. Böylece sanat ve tasarım etkileşiminde mekâna dair yeni deneyimler sunulmaktadır. Mekân sanatın ögesi olmaktan çıkmış ve sanatın kendisi olarak farklı bir ifade biçimi göstermektedir. Disiplinlerarası etkileşime dair örneklerden birini oluşturan bu yaklaşım, sanatın ifade biçimlerinden biri olarak James Turrell’in sanatını ortaya koymaktadır. Yapılan bu araştırma ile disiplinlerarası sanat anlayışında oluşturulacak yeni çalışmalara yol göstermek hedeflenmiştir.

In the modern period, art expression does not have a single form, it has become interdisciplinary. In this context, new experiences shaped by the unity of art and design fields and the contribution of science increase. With the rise of contemporary art, space plays an important role in these new forms of production and expression, offering different experiences to the viewer. The aim of this study is to convey the works of James Turrell, one of the artists working on the subjects of color-light-space, as well as expressions of contemporary art. As a methodology, descriptive research was used in this study, the literatüre was reviewed and the data were evaluated by using qualitative analysis method. As a result of the researches, Turrell's works, especially with the effect of both art, design and science, were examined and important examples created by the use of space, light and color were emphasized. Turrell creates new spaces by emphasizing the interaction of nature with art in his works and offers the audience new experiences of the space with the effects he creates with light and color in these spaces. His work becomes an art that is not only watched but also lived. Thus, new experiences of space are offered in the interaction of art and design. Space has ceased to be an element of art and shows a different form of expression as art itself. This approach, which is one of the examples of interdisciplinary interaction, reveals the art of James Turrell as one of the expressions of art. With this research, it is aimed to guide new studies to be created in an interdisciplinary understanding of art.
