A Neoformalistic View of Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s Movie Called Uzak

In this study, the film Uzak, the director of Nuri Bilge Ceylan, which has gained an important place in Turkish cinema in recent years, has been analyzed by utilizing the neoformalist approach which looks at the narrative-form relationship in cinema from a new perspective. Neoformalism was first introduced by American film researcher David Bordwell in his book Historical Poetics. This approach; examines narrative work of art in literature, cinema, and other arts; investigates the process and principles of creation of the work. Neoformalism seeks answers to two important questions: First, what are the Principles of film making process? The other is; under what conditions, how and why did films emerge? In this study, the concept of form and narrative in cinema have been explained by literature review. Then, information about neoformalist approach which focuses on the relationship between form and narrative in cinema is presented. Finally, the film Uzak was analyzed according to neoformalist principles. As a result of the analysis; it is determined that the narrative of the film is specific to the classical genre and there is not a plot-based narrative integrity that might appeal to the audience. The causality relationship in the narrative is weak. Also in the film, the narrative has a chronologically linear flow. As a form, a minimalist tendency in the film is remarkable. A simultaneous presentation of reality has formed the formal structure of the film in order to highlight the experience of everyday life. To emphasize the experience of daily life in the presentation of reality; focusing visual expression on the establishment of the atmosphere to expose this experience and capturing and revealing a direct, natural image of this experience is the most distinctive form of the film Uzak
