The Place of Abu Muzahim Musa b. Ubaydullah al-Khaqani’s “Qasidat al- Raiyyah” in The History of Tajweed

Tajweed is the name of science and art that deals with phonetic differences of Quranic letters and the rules of chanting. Each verse (26: 191-195) which was revealed to the heart of the Prophet by Allah (73: 4; 27:92; 29:45) had been read by the Prophet, his companions read them and He ordered that 'Read the Qur'an as you are taught: (Ahmed, Musnad, 2: 200; Beyhakî, es-Sunan el- Kubra, 2: 537; Ibn Hibban, al-Sahîh; 3: 5; Ibn Abi al-Shaybe, al-Musannaf, 6: 127; et-Tahavi, Sharh Ma'ani al-Asar, 3:18). His Companions transferred the revelation which they received from the Prophet to the next generation, and they passed on to the next generation. For this reason, it is said that 'the Recitation (Qiraath) is a sunnah (which the latter learned and practiced from the previous ones)' (Beyhakî, es-Sunenul-Kubrâ, 2: 539; Shu'abu'l-îmân, 4: 220). Till the Prophet, reading and got read the Qur'an was as a canonical training activity and the rules for reading the Qur'an were learned and taught through recitation from mouth to mouth. Finally, in the fourth century Abû Muzâhim Musa b. Ubeydullah b. Yahya b. Hakan el-Hakânî (d. 325) wrote a poetic treatise which entitled 'Kasidetu'r-Râiyye' which is consist of 51 couplets, it was started to be written in the field of tajweed and tajweed emerged as a science branch. However, the term of tajweed has not been widely used until this century. After the 4th century of Hegira calendar, with the multiplication of works written in this field, the term of tajweed had been used and it became the name of this science.
