In this neighbourhood, Armenians’ residence started when the city was subordinated to the Ottomans, and it continued until the collapse of the Ottoman Empire. Since the neighbourhood included the densest non-Muslim population and house dwelling, it stands out as a historical place when compared to other neighbourhoods. Because the big church in the neighbourhood consisted of the delegacy, it attracted many non-Muslims in the Urfa district. Therefore, the church served both as a sanctuary and an administrative centre where certain decisions are taken on behalf of the community. As a result, prominent members of the community such as artisans, craftsman and officers preferred to live in this neighbourhood. Other residents in the neighbourhood, who had a sense of responsibility, also took an active role in certain organizations like foundations and poverty fund. American and German missionaries, who rushed into the city after 1890s, carried out their activities in this neighbourhood due to the Armenian population that lived there. Therefore, first organizations and incidents, regarding the Armenian Rebellion that broke out in the late 1895, took place in this neighbourhood. From the 2nd Constitutional Period, one branch of each political parties was opened in order to make Armenian propaganda in the neighborhood and its surrounding. In this study, it is aimed to explore both cultural and political identity of the neighbourhood of Telfutur, which was one of the most historical residential areas in Urfa district. The primary sources used in the study mainly consist of records and documents in the İrâdeler, Bâb-ı Alî Evrak Odası, Dâhiliye, İrâde, Maliye Nezâreti sections of the Presidential Ottoman Archive, and lawsuits selected from Urfa District court records.},author={İsmail ASOĞLU},year={2018},journal={Journal of Turkish Studies}}
