Hızlı kentleşme ve aşırı nüfus artışının yol açtığı çevre bozulması kent yaşamının sürdürülebilirliğini ciddi ölçüde tehdit etmektedir. Ekosistemde kent ve kır bir bütün olup kent yaşamının sürdürülebilir hale gelmesi, ilgili bütün tarafların sürdürülebilir pratiklerin yaygınlaşması yönünde bilinçlendirilmeleriyle mümkün olabilir. Kent yaşamını sürdürülebilir hale getirmeye yönelik dünyanın çeşitli yerlerinde sürdürülebilirkent politikaları geliştirilmekte ve hayata geçirilmektedir. Bu politikaların arkasında kent yaşamını, sürdürülebilir pratiklerin doğaya uygunluk, yeterlik, verimlilik, katılım ilkelerine uygun şekilde tasarlama fikri yatmaktadır. Kent yaşamında gıda, giyim, ısınma, barınma, enerji ve elektrik, temizlik, kozmetik, sağlık, eğlence, dinlenme, eğitim, kültür, spor, ulaşım, tarım, çiftçilik gibi gündelik tüketim ihtiyaçlarıyla ortaya çıkan sürdürülebilir pratikler, sürdürülebilir kent dönüşümünün gerçekleşmesinde etkin rol almaktadır. Sözü edilen sürdürülebilir pratiklerin yaygınlaşması büyük ölçüde toplum tarafından benimsenmesi ve toplumsal katılımın sağlanmasına bağlıdır. Bu noktada sürdürülebilir pratiklerin yaygınlaşabilmesi için kent sakinlerine, yerel yönetim yetkililerine, uzmanlara, Sivil Toplum Kuruluşlarına (STK) ekonomik, sosyal ve çevresel boyutlarda önemli görevler düşmektedir. Buradan hareketle araştırmada, doktora tezi çalışmasında geliştirilmiş olan “sürdürülebilir kent modeli” tanıtılmaktadır. Bu çalışma tarama modeli türünde yürütülmüştür. Araştırma amaçlı örnekleme tekniği ile belirlenen Muğla ili Menteşe ilçe merkezinde kentsel yaşam pratiklerini kapsamaktadır. Veriler “yerinde gözlem”, “yüz yüze görüşme”, “derinlemesine görüşme” ve “doküman analizi” türünde nitel veri toplama araçları ile toplanmıştır. Belirlenen parametreler ve sürdürülebilir pratikler üzerinden içerik analizi ile çözümlenmiştir. Ulaşılan bulgular doğrultusunda, kent yaşamında sürdürülebilir pratiklerin yaygınlaşması için öneriler sunulmuştur.

Environmental degradation caused by rapid urbanization and over-population growth seriously threatens the sustainability of urban life. Sustainability of urban life can only be achieved by raising awareness among all parties about the spread of sustainable practices. Sustainable urban policies are developed and implemented in various parts of the world to make urban life sustainable. Behind these policies lies the idea of designing urban life in accordance with the principles of sustainable practices such as conformity to nature, competence, efficiency and participation. Sustainable practices emerging through the needs felt in everyday life such as food, clothing, heating, housing, energy and electricity, cleaning, cosmetics, health, leisure, recreation, education, culture, sports, transportation, agriculture, farming, etc. play effective roles in the realization of sustainable urban transformation. The proliferation of these sustainable practices depends to a large extent on their adoption by the community and social participation. At this point, in order for sustainable practices to become wide spread, urban residents, local government officials, experts, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) should assume important duties in economic, social and environmental dimensions. In this connection, “sustainable urban model” developed in a doctoral dissertation is introduced in the current research. This study was conducted in line with the survey model. The scope of the current study covers the urban life practices in the central province of the city of Muğla determined by means of the purposive sampling technique. The data were collected by using qualitative data collection tools such as “on-spot observations”, “face-to-face interviews”, “in depth interviews” and “document analysis”. They were analyzed through the content analysis on the basis of pre-determined parameters and sustainable practices. In light of the findings, some suggestions were made to make sustainable practices more widespread in urban life.
