ETRUSCAN’S SPORTS ACTIVITIES

The aim of this study is to investigate the Etruscan’s sports activities and effects. The Etruscans made sporting activities and held games on a variety of occasion’s funerals, victory celebrations, and religious festivals. Although the tomb paintings only include a physical environment for athletic competitions, there are certain findings that the Etruscans might have structures such as circuses, stadiums and gymnastic halls. The ancient Etruscan city of Tarquinia is famous for its painted burial chambers. The scenes depicted in these and other tombs clearly show that the Etruscans participated in many of the same events as the Creeks: chariot- and horse-racing, boxing, wrestling, and running, jumping with weights, and discus and javelin throwing. Many of the tomb paintings contain banquet scenes and dancing along with athletics: these may be interpreted as representations of the funerary celebrations held to honor the deceased. The Etruscans clearly loved sports activities and considered them an important aspect of their lives. Three tombs from Tarquinia have more familiar sporting events: The Tomb of the Olympiad, the Tomb of the Auguris, and the Tomb of the Pulcella. Each of these includes a depiction of as character unique to Etruscan games, the Phersu. The Tomb of the Auguris includes scenes of boxing, wrestling, a “tug-of-war,” and a runner. The paintings in the Tomb of the Olympiad portray a discus throw, a jumper, runners, boxers, and a chariot race. Examples of athletic compe¬tition are also found in other Etruscan art forms. Among the most common practices, sporting events, which are part of funerals, have been identified. The figures in wrestling and boxing encounters in Etruscan tombs are nude, but clothed sporting events have also been done. The Etruscans also competed in long and short distances. Etruscan phersu, boxing, wrestling and dance activities are in the foreground. Adjusting the rhythm with music Etruscans have been applied both in wrestling and boxing. The first form of mixed martial arts was also applied in Etruscans. Gladiator fights were accepted as the first form of society. Spectators ' cultures have come to the fore in sports.
