Hz. Umar in the Works of Mawlana Summary

This article has discussed Mawlana Jalal al-din Rumi’s view on Hz. Umar in his books, and focused on some important points. Mawlana regards Hz. Umar as a submissive and uncompromising servant in obeying Allah’s orders and an obedient disciple of Hz. Muhammad. Mawlana presents Hz. Umar as perfect human being with his decency, exemplary character, foresight, being honored with divine inspirations and problem solving skills as a murshid. Mawlana views Hz. Umar as a truly wise man who is good at understanding the spirit of worships and guiding people, besides being attentive to obedience to Islam with his ascetic attitude and devotion, besides being ascetic and worshipper, in the sight of. While Mawlana gives the message of what the true generosity is through Umar (ra); on the other hand, he focuses on the quality of worship rather than the quantity. Mawlana preferred Umar among the ṣaḥābī to give his own views in the matter of the Mahdi, which is a controversial issue with serious differences between the Ahl al-Sunnah and the Shia. In fact, the view of Jalal al-din Rumi on Mahdist faith is very different from both the view of Shia and the Ahl al-Sunnah. Besides, the great Sufi Mawlana depicts the Shia supporters’ reaction and hatred to Hz. Umar’s name and their fondness to the Hz. Ali by referring to the people of Tabriz and these two ṣaḥābī. He also does not neglect that Umar is the symbol of justice as his distinctive character. One of the characteristics of Umar that Mawlana emphasizes is that the devil is very ineffective against Umar and avoids from meeting him, in a sense, it is Umar's salvation from the influence and power of the devil. One of the most obvious characteristics of Faruk in Mawlana’s works is that he is not afraid of anything while defending justice against injustice but extremely gentle in the face of those who are right.
