Flight Crew Planning And Crew Rotation Optimization In Airline Operations: An Implementation In An Air Cargo Carrier

Flight Crew Planning can be defined as a process of assigning crew which is licensed by various qualifications to the flight missions in order to complete the flight program planned by the airline. Crew planning is a very financially critical issue for many industries. Considering airline companies, in particular, crew costs take place of the largest expenditure item after fuel costs. At the same time, efficient use of the crew members within the company due to limitations in duty-time is an important parameter that should be taken into account during the crew planning process. This situation makes team planning and optimization software extremely important to the airline industry. In the first stage of this paper, the theoretical researches of scheduling crew flight which is one of the largest expense items for airline operators, basic concepts and definitions related to airline crew scheduling have been examined. In the second part, crew planning is divided into crew matching and crew allocation. Moreover, problems related to matching and allocation, general properties of problem and some solution methods used in practice have been stated. In the final part of the study, MATLAB program was created using the data of flight chart of the Airbus A330-243F fleet on 03-09 May 2016 of a special air cargo operation in order to set new flight schedule for flight crew if that crew is in origin point and has minimum duty-hour and on the purpose of improvement of system some recommendations have been made.
