Sociological Analysis of the Novel “New Atlantis” as a Utopia of Renaissance Period


It is assumed that, people have lived together by means of establishing social relationships even if in the little scale communities like family, clan, tribe since the appearance of human beings. People living in the society have sometimes preoccupied about what is present an ideal. They compared to the current situation and reflected these thoughts and hopes in the field of literature. It is clear that social problems, crises, anti-development periods are troublesome processes for societies. However, this periods prepared the ground for different sciences and philosophical trends and their effects are often reflected in the fields of art such as literature, painting, music. During the dark ages of Europe and following Renaissance movement, many scientists were influenced and the works were brought to attention with the importance given to science and technique artefacts seen as the way out of dark age or savior. One ofe these works are utopias. Utopias which the first example in the history are seen in the Plato’s ‘The Republic’, based on whait is ideal for human beings when considered with the period ther are designed. After Platon’s work utopias continued and by various authors are generated. In this context, another utopian work created during the Renaissance period was ‘New Atlantis’, which was acquired by Bacon. Francis Bacon designed an ideal state in New Atlantis and set a vision of a society based on science and development. The greatest difference from his contemporaries is the emphasis on the importance of the effects of traditions in designing the ideal state order. In this study, it was seen that a new bill had been created that tradition and science blended in New Atlantis, and both this aspect of the work and the conditions of the time it emerged were sociologically evaluated.
