The Measurement of Horney's Neurotic Personality Types: Psychometric Properties of the Horney-Coolidge Tridimensional İnventory (HCTİ) Turkish Form

In this study, the psychometric properties of the Turkish form of the Horney-Coolidge Tridimensional Inventory, developed for the measurement of neurotic personality types in Horney's theory, were examined. The study was carried out in a population sample of 700 people consisting of 376 women (53.7%) and 324 men (46.3%) with an age range of 18-71 (32.65 ± 12.00). The Eysenck Personality Questionnaire Revised-Abbreviated Form (EPQR-A) and Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI) were applied to 126 participants for the convergent validity and predictive validity studies. Cronbach's alpha coefficients were 0.74, 0.75 and 0.75 for Compliance, Aggression and Detachment scales, respectively. As a result of test-retest analysis, correlation coefficients were found to be 0.79-0.86 in the main scales and 0.68-0.85 in the subscales. In the confirmatory factor analysis, all of the goodness of fit index values were found to be above the expected values for the fit criteria and the models suggested in the original study were confirmed. In the convergent validity analysis, the theoretically coherent correlation coefficients were found between the HCTI scales and the EPQR-A subscales. In the analysis of predictive validity, exclude of phobic anxiety, the common independent variable that predicts other psychological symptoms in BSI is the aggressiveness dimension. It has been found that the Compliance or Detachment dimensions are associated with the Aggression dimension at different rates and have predictive effects. When comparing HCT's scales averages according to gender groups, means of Aggression and Detachment scales were found in significant level higher in favor of male group. There was been no significant difference according to sex groups in the average of Compliance scale. In conclusion, findings were showed that HCTI has strong psychometric properties and can be used in researchs and clinical field.
