Social and cultural problems of foreign students who study at universities in Turkey


In the world, foreign student circulation is increasing day by day in higher education. This increase is affected in Turkey. For example, number of students who coming to Turkey for higher education 2013-2014 academic year, 48.183, this number has increased by more than two times in 4 years and reached 108,076 in 2016-2017 academic year(yok.gov.tr). Turkey's position is, potentially, relations with other countries, belief structure, progress in economic and social fields, foreigners coming to our country has been effective in increasing the number of students. This increasing can be considered as a satisfactory improvement as for Turkey. However, it is important to know more about the problems and difficulties that foreign students who come to my country have a peaceful, comfortable and productive tertiary education. In our country, it is necessary for certain students to identify the problems they have experienced in areas such as private, economic, social, cultural, education, bureaucracy and to solve these problems. The main purpose of this study, is to try to determine the problems faced by foreign students who come to Turkey with the purpose of higher education. The research was carried out at Karabuk University, where about 5 percent of the students who are in formal education are foreign. The result obtained from the survey study on 235 foreign students who are studying in formal education. According to the data obtained from the studies that foreign students stated that they had difficulties with the differences in method of teaching and learning. The students who participated in the research also stated that they have some problems about food and beverages. It has been understood that nearly all of the foreign students use internet and social media as mass media. Furthermore, according to findings from the study, it was understood that the vast majority of foreign students have experienced important problems with respect to accommodation, communication and seasonal differences.
