Çokkültürlülük kavramı, son yıllarda dünya çapında önemli bir kavram olarak kabul edilmektedir. Dünyada meydana gelen özellikle teknolojik gelişmeler ve küresel oluşumlar gibi hızlı değişme ve gelişmeler çokkültürlülük kavramının giderek önem kazanmasına neden olmaktadır. Bu değişimler çok çeşitli farklılıklara sahip bireylerin bir arada yaşamasını zorunlu hale getirmektedir. Dünya çapında çokkültürlülük yaklaşımının giderek önem kazanmasıyla birlikte, eğitim sistemleri içerisinde çokkültürlülüğe ilişkin farkındalığın da arttığı görülmektedir. Bu durum tüm eğitim sistemini etkilediği gibi yabancı dil eğitimini de etkilemiştir. Bu savdan hareketle, yapılmış olan çalışmada, ortaokul İngilizce öğretim programı ve ders kitapları çokkültürlü eğitim açısından incelenmiştir. Çalışmanın amacı, ortaokul İngilizce dersi öğretim programı ile İngilizce ders kitaplarında çokkültürlü eğitime ne kadar yer verildiğini ve çokkültürlü eğitimin nasıl ele alındığını incelemektir. Bu amaç doğrultusunda MEB tarafından dağıtılan ve devlet okullarında okutulan ‘’English Net’’ (5. ve 6. sınıf), ‘’Sunshine’’ (7. sınıf) ve ‘’Upturn in English’’ (8.sınıf) ders kitapları incelenmiştir. Ortaokul İngilizce programı ve ders kitapları incelenirken nitel araştırma yöntemleri içinde yer aan doküman analizi tekniği kullanılmıştır. Araştırmanın bulgularından elde edilen sonuçlar doğrultusunda, ortaokul İngilizce programı ve ders kitaplarında Türkiye gibi, içinde farklı halkların yer aldığı bir ulus devleti için son derece yetersiz olduğu, bu anlamda çokkültürlülükle ilişkili olarak ortaokul İngilizce öğretim programının ve kitaplarının çokkültürlülüğün ilkeleri doğrultusunda geliştirilmesi gerektiği belirlenmiştir.

The concept of multiculturalism has been recognized as an important concept throughout the world in recent years. Rapid changes and developments such as technological developments and global formations that are taking place in the world make the concept of multiculturalism increasingly important.These changes make it necessary to live together for people who have a wide variety of differences . Around the world with the increasing importance of multiculturalism, it is also seen that awareness of multiculturalism is getting increase in the education system. This affected not only the whole education system but also the foreign language education. In this sense, in this study, secondary school English lesson curriculum and coursebooks were examined in terms of multicultural education. The aim of the study is to examine what extent and how the multicultural education is included in the English lesson curriculum and the coursebooks. With this aim, ‘’English Net’’ (5th-6th class), ‘’Sunshine’’ (7th class) and ‘’Upturn in English’’ (8th class) cousebooks distributed by Ministry of Education and taught in state schools have been examined. In this study the document analysis technique included in the qualitative research methods was applied for the examination of secondary school English lesson curriculum and course books. In the light of the results obtained from the findings of the research, it has been determined that, the objectives and unıts related with the multiculturalism in the secondary school English curriculum and coursebooks it’s inadequate for a nation state in which there are different populations, such as Turkey, in this sense the secondary school English curriculum and coursebooks in relation to multiculturalism are required to undergo various improvements and changes.
