Thougts on Application of Minaret with Fountain of Old Mosque in Edirne

The minarets, which are thought to be originated from towers built for communication or divine purposes, appear in many different forms, sizes, materials and decorative elements in widespread Islamic world. The minarets, which are one of the indispensable elements of the mosques, have been studied in aspects of position, form, size, material and decorative characteristics but with less emphasis on their dual functions and design with another type of structure such as a fountain or sebil. In this study, it is aimed to introduce the northwest fountain imaret of Edirne Eski Camii combined with two different functions, minaret and fountain, in a single structure and to examine briefly the minarets that contain such water structures. Northwest minaret of Edirne Eski Camii is a unique example in terms of region and architectural period. There is a fountain inside a pointed arch, located at the base of the minaret with two balconies. According to sources, the minaret was added during the reign of II. Murat. This type of water feature hosting examples are also found in portal of Konya Sahip Ata Camii, Bursa Timurtaş Camii, The northwest minaret of Bursa Ulu Camii, minarets of Veled-i Yaniç Camii in Bursa, İsa Bey Fenari Camii in Bursa, Edirne Üç Şerefeli Camii, Muhaşşi Sinan Mosque in İstanbul, Yenikapı-Eski Camii in İstanköy (Kos), Yeni Cami in Mytilene (Lesvos), and Aziziye Mosque in Konya. It is possible to mention a separate group of terminology and typology under the name of fountain minarets, if these dual-functioning examples shaped on the basis of minaret and water structure can be extended.
