Word groups that are composed of two words having the same function (task) coming together are generally called reduplication or repeat group. Reduplications, which can be seen in may languages, are words that carry a resemblance or unity especially in terms of sound or meaning and assume various tasks in a sentence, adds rhythm (harmony) to the sentence, as well as fluency by supporting meaning with such functions as emphasis, reinforcement, enlivening, and expressing certainty. The phenomenon of reduplication is one of the most important assets of Turkish in terms of sound, concept and meaning. Indeed, one can see examples of reduplication beginning with the earliest written sources of Turkish. In this study, reduplications in the novel Devlet Ana (Parens Matriae/Patriae) by Kemal Tahir, who is one of the prominent novelists of Turkish Literature, were determined with their repeat numbers and subjected to a classification. The first edition of Devlet Ana, which was 623 pages, was published by Bilgi Yayınevi in 1967. Subsequently, it has been published numerous times by other publishing houses. Our study was based on the first edition mentioned above. We classified 448 different reduplications that we found in the novel as follows based on their meanings together with their numbers of use: 1) Those formed with repetition of the same word, 2) Those formed with repetition of synonyms or near synonyms, 3) Those formed with repetition of antonyms, 4) Those formed with onomatopoeic sounds (words), 5) Those formed with numbers, 6) Those formed with repetition of one meaningful an done meaningless. After all these procedures, we made observations concerning the author’s preferences with regard to his use of reduplications, his objectives and their reflections on his style.
