Primary School Teachers’ Views on Abolishment of Compulsory Cursive Handwriting in Primary Schools


Writing skills are one of the basic skills to be gained from the first year of primary school. When the Turkish teaching programs are examined from the announcement of the Republic to the day, it is seen that both the cursive writing and writing with upright basic letters are used. In order to achieve the purpose of the writing lessons, both the writing program in the primary school and the attitudes and experiences of the teachers have an important place. With the amendments made in the Turkish Curriculum in 2017, the obligation to apply the adjacent cursive writing has been lifted, and teachers have the right to choose which type of writing to use. This study was carried out in order to determine the opinions of the classroom teachers for the abolishment and preference of the cursive writing application which has been applied since 2005 in the first literacy teaching with the amendment made in the Turkish Curriculum in 2017. Phenomenology which is one of the methods of qualitative research was employed in the study. The study group of the study consist of 29 first grade primary school teachers who work in Bayburt city. The convenience sampling method was used in order to from the study group. A semi-structured interview form created by researchers was used to collect research data. Constant comparison analysis method was for data analysis. According to results teachers think that compulsory cursive writing was abolished due to some reasons such as teaching cursive writing to first grade pupils in primary schools is difficult and it is difficult to read texts written by using cursive writing. With the abolishment of this obligation most of the teachers preferred to use normal writing with upright basic letters. At the end of the study some suggestions were made to improve the quality of teaching writing.
