Türk hikâyeciliğinin dil, anlatım, kurgu ve içerik yönlerinden gelişip yetkinleşmesinde önemli pay sahibi yazarlardan biri olan Refik Halit Karay; roman türünde sayıca daha fazla eser verse bile öncelikle “hikâyeci” kimliğiyle bilinir. Anadolu’yu özellikle sürgünlük yıllarında yakından tanıma olanağı bulan yazar, gözleme dayalı bir gerçekçilikle bu coğrafyayı ve insanlarını anlattığı hikâyelerini “Memleket Hikâyeleri;” Orta Doğu coğrafyasına açıldığı hikâyelerini “Gurbet Hikâyeleri” adlı kitaplarında toplamıştır. Kendisi varlıklı bir İstanbul ailesinin çocuğu olarak yetişmesine, bambaşka bir sosyal tabakaya mensup olmasına karşın edebiyatta Anadolu’nun tarafsız ve gerçekçi bir yaklaşımla yeterince yer bulmamasını büyük bir eksiklik olarak görmüş, bundan duyduğu rahatsızlığı çeşitli defalar dile getirmiş, ilk örneklerinden başlayarak hikâyelerinde bilinçli bir biçimde böyle bir yol izlemiştir. İzlediği çizgide, kaynağını ve gücünü konuşulan Türkçeden alan bir edebiyat dilinin oluşmasına da büyük katkılar sunmuştur. Gerçeklikle bağdaştırarak kurguladığı olay ve kişileri yer yer ince alaya varan bir eleştirel bakışla veren Karay’ın; hiçbir zaman kolaycılığa düşmeme, sıradan övgü ya da yergi düzeyinde kalmama, üzerinde durduğu meseleleri günlük politikanın tartışma sınırlarına indirgememe çabası dikkati çeker. Bu özen içinde, kadın-erkek ilişkilerinin çeşitli yönlerini de hikâyelerine konu edinir. Anlattığı dönem ve kültür coğrafyasının toplumsal koşulları içinde kadınla erkeğin birbirlerine göre konum, algı ve davranış farkları ekseninde ortaya konulan bu ilişkiler; nitelik ve mahiyetlerini açığa çıkaracak tipik yanlarıyla okura sunulur. Çoğunlukla bunların kapalı toplum yapısında ortaya çıkabilecek biçimleri, cinselliğin/ cinsel kimliğin öne çıktığı olay ve durumlar üzerinden işlenir. Bu yazıda, genel olarak ve alt başlıklar hâlinde, kadın-erkek ilişkilerinin Refik Halit Karay’ın hikâyelerine yansıyan yanları ele alınmaya çalışılmış; yazıldığı dönemin sosyo-kültürel yapısına ilişkin bir ölçüde fikir edinilmesine de yardımcı olabilecek bir konunun hikâye kurgusu içinde işlenişi irdelenmek istenmiştir.

Refik Halit Karay is one of the writers who have been important contributors in the development and competence in terms of language, narration, fiction and content in Turkish story. Even if he produced much more literary works in number in the type of novel, he is known primarily as a "narrator/storyteller" identity. The writer, who had the opportunity to get closely acquainted with Anatolia specifically in his years of exile, collected his stories in which he depicted this geography and people with a realism based on an observation in his book titled "Memleket Hikâyeleri” (Stories of Homeland) and collected his stories about the geography of Middle East in his book titled "Gurbet Hikâyeleri” (Stories of Abroad). Although he was grown up as a child of a wealthy family in Istanbul and belonged to a completely different social class, he noticed that Anatolia's lack of adequate room in literature with impartial and realistic approach as a great shortage, and expressed his annoyance and trouble therefrom in several times. Therefore he followed such a way consciously in his stories starting from their initial samples. On the path that he followed, he also provided great contributions in the formation of a literature language which received its source and power from the spoken Turkish. The strenuousness of Karay, who had given incidents and individuals that were fictionalized by himself in association with the realism, occasionally at a critical view in a sarcastic manner; never to take the easy way of achievement, not to stay at the level of usual praise or satire, not to downgrade any matters dwelt on by him to the limits of daily-political-discussion, is remarkable and conspicuous. Within the foregoing meticulous care that was exercised by him, various aspects of man-woman relationships has been the subject of his stories. These relationships which have been revealed within the axis of position, perception and behavioral differences within the social conditions of the period narrated by him and cultural geography; have been presented to the readers along with their typical aspects so as to unveil their quality and characteristics. Generally their forms that may come up from a closed society structure have been handled through events and circumstances by which sexuality/sexual identity was highlighted. In the present article, in general and sub-titles, aspects of man-woman relationships which were reflected onto the stories of Refik Halit Karay have been tried to be discussed; it has been required to scrutinize its treatment within a story fiction of a subject that may be helpful to get an idea up to the rate for the socio-cultural structure of the period in which it was written.
