The Impact of Modern Arab Theater on Algerian and Sudanese Culture

In this study, the influence of modern Arab theater on the Algerian and Sudanese culture was researched. First, the theater in general and the theater in Arab world were explained. Then, the development in the field of theater during the independence efforts in Algeria and Sudan was emphasized. Algeria was under French occupation from 1830 to 1962. Concurrently, Sudan was under British occupation from 1899 to 1956. These two-time periods seem to indicate a connection, because British and French are historically known to coordinate the suppression of the rebellions in the related countries. One of the most common strategies by these two countries is to dominate their own language and culture over the occupied countries. Theater is an effective avenue to achieve this kind of goal, therefore the colonial states tend to focus their attention on this field by transporting foreign plays for smooth adaptation. In reaction to this, the concerned intellectuals of recipient country realize the impact of the theater on the people and start forming their own amateur theater groups. As the theater becomes prevalent in the society, theater rises an awareness for reclaiming own-culture. Algerians and Sudanese utilized the culturally relevant plays as tools to re-claim their identity against the foreign political, cultural and ideological influence. It is enough to take a stern look at the theater to understand the years that the countries pass through. The multiplicity of the number of theater groups formed in the years of independence is remarkable in this sense. These groups tried to fill the cultural area neglected by the states. Theater groups have become cultural venues for actors, writers and directors to communicate with the public.
