Bölgesel kalkınma, son yıllarda giderek ön plana çıkan bir çalışma alanı konumundadır. Yapısı gereği, pek çok bilim dalının da içerisinde yer almaktadır. Bunda özellikle sosyal adaletin tesisi ve dezavantajlılığın önlenmesi içeriği etkilidir. Özellikle üç bilim disiplinini oluşturan sosyal politika, bölgesel iktisat ve kalkınma iktisadının yolları, bölgesel kalkınma çalışma alanında giderek artan ölçüde kesişmektedir. Bu da söz konusu üç bilim dalının ilk bakışta birbirinin çalışma alanlarına müdahil olduğu algısına yol açmaktadır. Halbuki bölgesel iktisatla bölgesel kalkınmanın mevcut yapısı ve gelişimi analiz edilirken, kalkınma iktisadında kalkınmaya yön verecek bölgesel iktisat politikaları türetilmektedir. Dolayısıyla bölgesel iktisat durum ve gelişim analizine odaklanır. Analiz ne olması gerektiğini değil ne olduğunu ortaya koyar. Böylelikle de kalkınma iktisadı ve sosyal politika bilim disiplinlerine veri girişi sağlar. Buna karşılık kalkınma iktisadı ilkeler belirler ve bu ilkelere göre politika oluşturur. Böylece de bölgesel iktisat ve kalkınma iktisadı birbirlerini bütünler. Kalkınma iktisadı ve sosyal bilim dalları da birbirlerini bütünleyen özelliktedir. Gelişme yoksa dezavantajlılık vardır. Dezavantajlılık varsa sosyal politikanın faaliyet alanı başlar. O halde kalkınma politikaları oluşturmak, dolaylı sosyal politika türetmekle özdeştir. Ancak sosyal politika kalkınmanın nasıl sağlanacağıyla ilgilenmez. Sadece dezavantajlılığı önlemeye veya hafifletmeye çabalar. Bu çaba çoğu zaman kalkınmaya da hizmwet eder. Bu sebeple de sosyal politika disiplini ise iktisat politikalarına ek olarak sosyal politikaların da belirlenerek çatı bilim dalı rolünü üstlenmesini beraberinde getirmektedir. Bu çalışmada da bölgesel kalkınmanın söz konusu üç bilim dalıyla etkileşimi ve beraberinde üç bilim dalı arasında yol açtığı birleşime odaklanılmıştır.

Regional development has become an increasingly important field of study in recent years. Due to its structure, it is included in many sciences. This is particularly influential in the provision of social justice and the prevention of disadvantage. Social policy, regional economics and development economics, which constitutes three scientific disciplines, this leads to the perception that the three sciences are involved in each other's fields of work at the first sight. Whereas the current structure and development of regional economies are studied by regional economics, the social policy discipline, in addition to the economic policies, determines the social policies and takes on the role of the roof scientist. Therefore regional economics focuses on analyzing the situation and development. Analyzes made show what socio-economic structure is, not what it should be. Thus, regional economics provides data entry into the disciplines of development economics and social politics. On the other hand, development economics sets principles and creates policies according to these principles. In this respect, regional economics and development economics complement each other. Development economics and social politics also complement each other, too. If there is no improvement, there is disadvantage. If there is disadvantage, the field of activity of social politics starts. In that case, creating development policies is equivalent to deriving indirect social policy. However social policy is not interested in how development can be achieved. This effort often serves economic development as well, although it can only try to prevent or mitigate disadvantage. In this study, the interaction between these three sciences and regional development, and the combination between them are focused.
