Tüketim olgusu insanlık tarihinin her döneminde var olmuş ve toplumsal yapının özelliklerine göre yeni bir şekil alarak insan ve toplum yaşantısını etkilemede önemli bir yeri olmuştur. Zamanla tüketim ve kültür kavramları bir arada kullanılmış, hem akademik hem de farklı çevrelerde tüketim ve tüketim kültürünün birey ve toplum hayatı üzerindeki etkilerine dair tartışmalar yürütülmüştür. Bu bağlamda tüketim kültürünün nasıl doğduğuna dair akademik literatüre bakıldığında, kimilerinin 18. ve 19. Yüzyıldaki sanayileşme ve modernitiye dayandırdığı kimilerinin ise postmodern dönemin bir ürünü olarak ele aldığı görülmektedir. Türkiye özelinde düşünüldüğünde, tüketim ve tüketim kültürünün etkilerine dair yapılan tartışmaların ve getirilen eleştirilerin modernleşme sürecinin ilk evrelerinde yaşanan gelişmelerle de yakın bir ilişki içinde olduğu düşünülmektedir. Nitekim Osmanlı imparatorluğu döneminde, itici gücü askeri yenilgiler olmakla birlikte toplumsal ve siyasal alanda etkilerini gösteren ve bir proje olarak nitelendirilebilecek modernleşme sürecinde Batılılaşmanın yönünün ne olacağı, toplum ve birey üzerindeki izdüşümleri önemli bir tartışma konusu olmuştur. Bu konuda farklı fikirler ortaya atılırken yine aynı sürecin bir ürünü olan romanlarda da aynı konunun ele alındığı görülmekte, bu yolda nasıl ilerleneceğine dair “doğru” ve “yanlış”lara ilişkin bir çerçeve çizilmektedir. İşte bu minvalde altı çizilen unsurlardan biri de tüketim olgusudur. Zira kimi zaman Batılılaşmanın yanlış yorumlanmasının bir sonucu olarak ele alınan tüketim olgusu ve yaşam tarzları Tanzimat Dönemi romanlarında ele alınmıştır. Dönemin romanlarında bu konuları işleyen önemli eserlerden biri kuşkusuz Ahmet Mithat’ın kaleme aldığı “Felâtun Bey ile Rakım Efendi”dir. Bu çalışmada söz konusu eserde “tüketim” konusunun nasıl ele alındığı, bu kapsamda hangi imgelerin kullanıldığı ve eserin nasıl bir anlatı yapısına sahip olduğu hem romandaki karakterler hem de olaylar üzerinden ele alınmıştır.

Concept of consumption has been in every period of human history and has had an important place in affecting individual and social life by reshaping itself according to the characteristics of the social structure. In the course of time, concepts of consumption and culture have been used together, and both in academic and different domains, there have been discussions on the effects of consumption and consumption culture on individual and social life. In this respect, when academic literature is reviewed on how consumption culture originated, it is seen that some base it on modernity and industrialisation in 18th and 19th centuries, and some address it as a product of postmodern era. When it is considered specific to Turkey, it is thought that discussions and criticisms on the effects of consumption and consumption culture are in close relationship with the developments that took place in the first stages of modernisation process. Hence, in Ottoman Empire era, it was discussed that what would be the direction of Westernisation in the modernisation process, which can be described as a project and affected social and political domains notwithstanding the fact that its driving force was military defeats. Its projection on society and individuals was also the topic of these discussions. While different ideas were brought forward on this issue, it is seen that the same topic was discussed in the novels which were the products of the same process, and a framework was displayed on "rights" and "wrongs" about how to stay in this course. Within this direction, the concept of consumption was one of the concepts which was emphasised. Likewise, the concept of consumption and life styles, which were sometimes treated as a result of a misinterpretation of Westernisation, were addressed in the novels of Tanzimat reform era. Undoubtedly, one of the most important works that addressed this issue is "Felâtun Bey ile Rakım Efendi" which was written by Ahmet Mithat. In this study, how "consumption" is studied, which images are used within this scope and what kind of narration style the work has, are addressed both through characters and events in the novel.
