The claim that some Muslim individuals are not within Islam, in spite of the fact that they declare themselves as Muslims, articulated by some other adherents of Islam has appeared as a problematic. In this paper, this problematic has been analysed within the context of the Qur’an and the hadith. In the study, it is attempted to reach a conclusion by making a reference to the damage to Muslim society caused by the groups and fractions’, which have been constituted as a consequence of political conflicts and the outbreak of disunity and clashes among Muslim communities, act of using takfir as a weapon against one another. Takfir is among the critical issues of the present age along with being breaking point in terms of disrupting the unity and solidarity among Muslim society within the history of Islam. It is a serious threat to the love and affection among Muslims. It has the potential to exacerbate the situation in which disputes and slanders are rampant. Consequently, Muslim society is confronted with the danger of consuming its strength merely upon domestic issues along with the destruction of the spirit of unity and solidarity. Takfir is an act of accusing someone of being a non-Muslim because of that s/he does not act in accordance with the essential tenets of Islam. As a religious terms, takfir could only be explained with reference to the Qur’an and Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). It seems obvious that the issue will be mainly clarified to the extent that viewpoints of these aforementioned sources over takfir is clearly reflected. Therefore, this study examines how the Qur’an and the hadith view takfir. The results have been comprehensively evaluated. It undoubtedly needs caution to accuse anyone who declares that s/he is a Muslim and reflects it to some of the deeds of takfir. In short, it has been attempted to reflect whether a standard or a relativity exists in takfir. During this relativity, group fanaticism and the attempt to gain a psychological advantage against any groups who rejects their own interpretations of Islam have appeared as the major problem. Once this problem could be overcome, it appears that the major obstacle to delivering solidarity among Muslim society could be removed.
