Türkiye’de yeni Türk Alfabesinin kabul edilmesinden sonra Kıbrıs Türkleri de yeni Türk alfabesini benimseme kararı almıştır. Bu karar İngiliz sömürge yönetimi tarafından da onaylanmıştır. Yeni Türk alfabesinin Kıbrıs’ta Türkiye ile eş zamanlı olarak uygulanması için hemen hazırlıklara başlanmıştır. Öncelikle Kıbrıs Muallimler Cemiyeti halkın yeni Türk alfabesini öğrenmelerini sağlamak için eğitim öğretim faaliyetlerini yürütmeye gönüllü olmuştur. Kıbrıslı Türk öğretmenlerin çabasıyla yeni Türk alfabesi süratle ve büyük bir heyecanla adanın her yanında uygulanmaya konmuştur. Ayrıca Ada’daki Türk gazetelerinin desteğiyle yeni alfabeye geçiş konusunda bir kampanya başlatılmış, kısa bir geçiş döneminin ardından da gazeteler tümüyle Yeni Türk alfabesiyle çıkartılmaya başlanılmıştır. Kıbrıslı Türklerin yeni Türk alfabesini kısa sürede öğrenmelerini sağlamak için Türkiye’den yeni alfabeler, öğretmenler ve yeni matbaa harfleri gönderilmiştir. Bunun yanı sıra yeni Türk alfabesinin Kıbrıs’ta uygulanışını kolaylaştırmak için Türkiye tarafından maddi katkılarda da bulunulmuştur. Örneğin Söz Gazetesi için Almanya’dan sipariş edilen yeni Latin Harflerinin parası ödenmiştir. Kıbrıs’ta Yeni Türk alfabesinin öğretilmesi için yürütülen faaliyetler ve Türkiye’nin yardımları sayesinde kısa sürede başarıya ulaşılmıştır. Bu çalışmada, Kıbrıs Türklerinin Yeni Türk alfabesini benimsemesi ve uygulaması için yürütülen faaliyetler irdelenmiştir. Ayrıca bulgular ışığında; modern Türkiye’nin oluşum sürecinin Kıbrıs’a yansıması ve etkisi ortaya konmaya çalışılmıştır. Araştırma verileri, döneme ilişkin arşiv kaynakları, süreli yayınlar, tetkik eserler ve anılardan oluşturulmuştur.

Following the agreement to use the new Turkish alphabet in Turkey, Turkish Cypriots also decided to adopt the new Turkish alphabet. This decision was also embraced by the English Colonial Administration. Preparations were made in Cyprus to start using the new Turkish alphabet concurrently with Turkey. Cyprus Teachers Association volunteered for the training activities to ensure that the public learned the new alphabet. With the efforts of the teachers with Cyprus Turkish descent, the new Turkish alphabet started to be used across the island with much gusto and speed. Additionally, a campaign was launched with the leadership of the Söz Gazette and the support of Turkish newspapers in the island to facilitate the passage to the new alphabet. After a short period of initiation, all the newspapers were printed with the new Turkish alphabet. New alphabet, teachers and block letters were sent from Turkey to Cyprus to ensure that Turkish Cypriots learned the new alphabet in a short time. Financial support was also provided by Turkey to facilitate the use of the new Turkish alphabet in Cyprus. For instance, the cost of new Latin block letters ordered from Germany for the Söz Gazette was paid. Activities undertaken to teach the new Turkish alphabet in Cyprus were successful in a short time frame with the support from Turkey. This study examined the activities undertaken to ensure the adoption and use of the new Turkish alphabet by the Turkish Cypriots. Based on the findings, the study also presented the reflections and impact of the formation of modern Turkey on Turkish Cypriots. Data used for the study were composed of archived sources for the period, periodicals, revisions and memoirs.
