About “mı” Which is Interrogative

“mI” which is interrogative, stating question that it is word or affix, if it is a word, it is which kind of word is one of the controversial topics of our grammar. Words, regarding their use and positions in a sentence, are definitely transitional. Furthermore, they are considered by some researchers as transitional although they preserve their use and position. The question affix “mI” is one of them. The affix, used as mı, mi, mu, and mü today, as rounded vowels mu and mü in Old Turkish and as only unrounded mı and mi in Old Anatolian Turkish is not only considered as a different type of word category, but also as an affix by some researchers. Researchers have different ideas about this topic. These opinions are remarked with 6 points: 1. Acceptors as affix, 2. Acceptors as preposition, 3. Acceptors as both affix and preposition, 4. Acceptors as adverb, 5. Acceptors as both preposition and adverb, 6. Acceptors as both affix and conjunction. In the Turkish dictionary of Turkish Language Society, “mı, mi’’ is taken as lexical entry, but it is not determined which kind of it. It indicates that “mı, mi’’ is treated in such different kinds or it is not to be determined kind that the issue is worth investigating. We wrote up our this article on the purpose of indicating a viewpoint whether “ mI’’ has a compromised place in our grammar, deciding that it is either an affix or a word and determining what kind of word will be more appropriate if it is a word. Firstly in our article, we mentioned that researchers analysed “mI’’ what kind of it. Then we shared the preferences of the researchers in a chart. Later, we stated the results that we get by expressing our opinion and determination about the subject based on datas.
