Ahmet Mithat Efendi, Tanzimat Dönemi edebiyatında üretkenliği ile “yazı makinesi”, okurlarına basit düzeyde olsa da yeni bilgileri aktarma gayreti ile “hâce-i evvel” şeklinde anılmış bir sanat ve düşünce insanıdır. Osmanlı Devleti’nin Batı’ya yöneldiği bir dönemde o, ele aldığı edebi türlerle Türk edebiyatına yön vermiş, bunun yanında çığır açıcı isimlerden biri olmuştur; çünkü eserleriyle okurlarının dünya ile ilgili algısını etkilemiştir. Ahmet Mithat Efendi, 1872 yılından 1894 yılına kadar parça parça hikâyeler yayımlamıştır. Daha sonra bu hikâyeleri Letaif-i Rivayat başlıklı bir kitapta bir araya getirmiştir. Yirmi dokuz hikâyeden oluşan bu kitapta o, birçok toplumsal konulara değinmiştir. Bu konulardan biri evliliktir. Bu çalışmada Letaif-i Rivayat içinde yer alan hikâyelerde evlilik konusunun hikâyelere yansıma şekilleri incelenmiştir. Çalışmamız bu amaç doğrultusunda iki ana başlık altında ele alınmıştır: Evlilik öncesi ve evlilik sonrası. Evlilik öncesi başlığı altında yazarın evliliğe olumlu ve olumsuz bakışının nedenleri, evlilik öncesinde çiftlerin yapmaları gereken işler ve evlenme merasimleri ele alınmıştır. Evlilik sonrası başlığı altında ilk olarak Ahmet Mithat Efendi’nin evliliğe zarar verecek durumlara dair örnekleri değerlendirilmiştir. İkinci olarak hikâyelerde yer alan evli çiftler arasındaki sevginin durumu incelenmiştir. Bunların yanında yazarın kadınların evlilik sonrası bireysel varoluşlarıyla ilgili örnekleri ele alınırken onun çok eşlilik karşıtlığı, erkeğin eşinin ölümünün hemen ardından evlenmesine yönelik tepkisi ve mutlu bir evlilikte çocuğun etkisine dair düşünceleri bu hikâyeler bağlamında ele alınmıştır.

Ahmet Mithat Efendi is a man of art and thought who has been described as a "writing machine" with his productivity and "hace-i evvel" which is named as first teacher with his effort to convey new information to his readers at a simple level in the literature of Tanzimat Era. In a period when the Ottoman State was headed for the West, he directed Turkish literature through the literary genres he was dealing with, and besides he became one of the groundbreaking names because he has influenced the perception of his readers about the world by his works. Ahmet Mithat Efendi published the series of the stories from 1872 to 1894. Then he brought these stories together in a book named Letaif-i Rivayat. In this book, which consists of twenty-nine stories, he mentions many social issues. One of these issues is marriage. In this study, the reflection of marriage-related issues on the stories is examined. It is formed under two main headings for this purpose: the pre-marriage and the post-marriage. Under the pre-marriage heading, the reasons for the positive and negative views of the writer about marriage, the writer’s thought about the works that must be done by couples before marriage and the marriage ceremonies are examined. In the post-marriage heading, firstly, the examples given by Ahmet Mithat Efendi about the situations that would harm marriage were evaluated. Secondly, the love among the married couples in the stories was perused. In addition to these, the examples given by the writer about the individual existence of the women in the post-marriage period were analyzed. Ahmet Mithat’s reaction to polygamy, to a man’s marriage immediately after the death of his wife, and his thoughts about the influence of a child in a happy marriage were also studied in the context of these stories.
