لقد شهد العصر الحديث حركات تجديدية على العديد من المستويات الفكرية والفنية والأدبية، وذلك بسبب ما شهده العالم من نهضة، أثرت بشكل واضح على المنحى العام للإبداع الفني والتفكير العلمي. وقد ظهر نتيجة لذلك _في مجال الفنون_ العديد من المدارس كالانطباعية والتعبيرية والرمزية... إلخ. وقد واكب ظهور هذه المدارس بما فيها من تجديد في الرؤية والتصور لمفهوم الفن وأهدافه وآلياته وخلفياته الفلسفية والنظرية، وعناصره ظهور تجديد على مستوى الإبداع الأدبي سواء على مستوى الشكل أو المضمون. يرى محمد في دراسة بعنوان (قراءة جديدة لريادة الشعر) أن رائد الشعر العربي الحديث هو جبرا إبراهيم جبرا، وليس نازك الملائكة أو غيرها.
