Faust efsanesi, Alman edebiyatına ilham vermekle birlikte hem dünya edebiyatlarının hem de pek çok başka sanat dalının esinlendiği bir kaynak olma konumuna yükselir. Bundan yola çıkarak manzum bir trajedi yazan Goethe'nin Faust'u ise klasik Faust efsanelerinden farklı olarak insanın yaşam içindeki yolculuğunu modernizmin ilkeleri bağlamında bir değerlendirmeye tâbi tutmaya imkân sunar. İlk bakışta anakrotik olarak görülen bu ilgi, metnin içine girdikçe perde perde açılarak insanın dış dünya ile kurduğu irtibatın yahut bu dünya içerisinde yer alma çabasının, bazen daha fazlasına sahip olma arzusunun bir yansımasını sunmak, kendisini üreten düşünceyi eleştirmek ve genel manada bir tenkit mekanizmasına sahip olmak bakımından muhtelif hadiseler ve vaziyetler ışığında incelenmeye olanak sağlar. Goethe'nin Faust'u modern insanın sergüzeştine, gelenekten ve onun beraberinde getirdiği yaşam tarzından kopuşuna, kendini ve çevresinde olup bitenleri sorgulayışına, topumun aksak yönlerine, kurulan yeni düzenin işleyişine dair pek çok durumu içinde barındırır. Ancak eser yalnızca Alman toplumunun bir aynası olarak okunmaktan ziyade hem bireysel hem de toplumsal manada evrensel bir niteliğe kavuşur ve modernizm çerçevesinde değerlendirilmeye açık bir hâle gelir. Bu çalışmada önce Goethe'nin eserini meydana getirirken tesiri altında kaldığı cereyanlardan, filozoflardan ve düşüncelerden bahsedilmiş daha sonra ise modernizm bağlamında insanın dünya ile olan bağının ve yer küredeki yolculuğunun izi sürülmüş, zaman zaman da Türk edebiyatı ile ilgi kurularak Faust'a bir zemin teşkil edilmiştir.

The legend of Faust inspires the German literature and becomes a source by which many world literature and many branches of art get inspired from it. Based on this, the poignancy of the tragedy written by Goethe's Faust enables to assess the journey of the people in life in the context of principles of modernism, unlike the classic Faust legends. Appearing as anachronic at first glance, this interest enables the relation of the people with the external world by opening gradually as you go deeper into the text, or their attempt to be in this world, and sometimes to present the reflection of desire to have more and criticize the idea that produces them and have an analysis mechanism in general terms and examine miscellaneous events and situations. Goethe's Faust involves the adventure of the modern people, their break from the tradition and its lifestyle, questioning themselves and what happens around them, disorganized aspects of the society, and operation of the new order and much more. However, it is of the global quality both in the individual and social sense, rather than being the reflection of the German society only and enters into the public domain to be assessed under modernism. First of all, the movements, philosophers, ideas that influenced the Goethe while he creates his artwork, have been addressed in this study, and then the relation of people with the world and their journey throughout the earth have been traced in the context of modernism and laid the groundwork for Faust by occasionally relating with Turkish literature.
