Exitentialist Interpretation of the Types of Euthanasia by Patient’s Voluntariness Status


This paper aims to reveal the possibility of adopting an existentialist approach towards types of euthanasia by patient’s voluntariness status. Within this scope, firstly the types of euthanasia by patient’s voluntariness status are briefly described on the basis of the relevant literature, and then, on the basis of these definitions, a number of questions or problems that may arise concerning each of these types are reformulated in an existentialist style. Answers were sought for these questions or problems by bringing forward a number of comments within the framework of the fundamental ideas and themes of existentialism. It was understood during the study that a number of existential problems can be observed within the context of voluntary euthanasia such as the person’s relationship with his/her body, preference of death over life, and whether the freedom to end a life exists, as well as other problems within the scope of non-voluntary and involuntary euthanasia such as others’ decisions on behalf of the person. Applying an existentialist approach towards these problems yielded the following conclusion: It is not possible to adopt a positive approach towards euthanasia because of the priority given to life over death in existentialism and because of the vital importance attached to how much a person has made sense of his/her life throughout the period he/she has lived.
