Tarihi binlerce yıl öncesine dayanan ve geçmişte önemli ticaret yolları üzerinde bulunan Harran birçok medeniyete ev sahipliği yapmış ve buna bağlı olarak çeşitli kültürlerin sentezlendiği önemli bir yerleşme olarak günümüze kadar varlığını devam ettirmiştir. Bu kültürel birikim Harran ilçesinde birçok tarihi, arkeolojik, inanç ve diğer kültürel turizm değerlerinin ortaya çıkmasına zemin hazırlamıştır. Harran ilçe merkezi çeşitli derecelerde sit alanı ilan edilen arkeolojik alanlar; ören yerleri, höyük alanları, antik kent ve yerleşim yerleri, kaya mezarları ve mağara, tarihi açıdan; kale, sur ve kapılar, inanç boyutu ile cami, türbe gibi kutsal sayılan yerler nedeniyle kültür turizmi açısından zengin bir potansiyele sahiptir. Geçmiş dönemlerin kültürünü, tarihini ve yaşam izlerini günümüze yansıtan en önemli unsurlardan biri tarihi yerleşmeler ve bu yerleşmeleri oluşturan meskenlerdir. Tarihin günümüze sunduğu miras olan meskenler, özellikle 1950’li yıllardan sonra kültür ve miras turizmi açısından önem kazanmışlardır. Kültürel farklılıkları yerinde görmek ve sıra dışı deneyimler yaşamak isteği tarihi alanlara yönelik turizm aktivitelerinin artmasına ve yaygınlaşmasına sebep olmuştur. Meskenlerin mimari biçimleri bir kentin hafızalarda yer eden en önemli simgelerinden biridir. Yerleşme dokusu içerisinde estetik görünüm bakımından ayrı bir güzellik oluşturan kubbe formlu meskenler görüntüleriyle ve otantik ortamlarıyla kültürel turizm meraklılarının ilgi odağı olmuşlardır. Tarihi süreç içerinse değişen sosyo-ekonomik şartlar nedeniyle kullanılmayan bu meskenlerin bir kısmı zamanla tahrip olmuştur. Kültürel değerlerin turizmde kullanılmasının yanı sıra son yıllarda ortaya çıkan tarihi mirasın korunması ve yaşatılması çabaları sonucu yok olma tehlikesi ile karşı karşıya gelen bu meskenlerin bir bölümü günümüzde koruma altına alınarak turizme kazandırılmıştır. Böylece ülkemizin ve dünyanın önemli maddi kültür varlıklarından biri olan kubbe evlerin sürdürülebilir şekilde korunması ve yaşatılması yönünde önemli bir aşama kaydedilmiştir.

Harran with its history going back to centuries ago and being located in an important trading route, has been home to many civilizations and therefore has continued its existence until today as an important habitation where many cultures has been synthesised together. This cultural accumilation in Harran has set ground for many cultural values such as historical, archeologic, belief and so on to unfold in the county. Harran county seat has a rich potential in terms of cultural tourism for having many protected areas as in archeological areas such as: ruins, mound areas, antique cities and settlements, rock-cut tombs and caves, historical sites such as: castles, bulwards and gates and in terns of belief, places that are considered as holy like mosques and shrines. One of the most important elements which represent the traces of the previous eras’ culture, history and life traces, is the historical habitations and the residences which formed these habitations. The residences that are inherited from the past, gained importance in terms of culture and heritage tourism especially after 1950s. The desire to see the cultural differences in their original places and to have extraordinary experiences has caused the touristic activities which are aimed at historical places to increase and become popular. Architectural styles of the residences are one of the most important symbols that leave a mark in the memories. Dorm formed residences which for an extra beauty in term of aesthetic appearance in habitation pattern, have become the center of attention for cultural tourism fanciers with their appearances and their authentic settings. Some of these residences have fallen into ruin for not being used due to socio-economic condition changes during the historical process. Besides cultural values being used in tourism, as a result of the efforts made emergent in recent years to protect and sustain the historical heritage, some of these residences which were facing the danger of extinction are put under protection and now are redounded in tourism. Thus and so, an important progress has been made to sustainably protect and to sustain the dome houses, one of the most important material culture entities both in our country and the world.
