Turkish Commentaries Of Mesnevi

The work of Mevlana Rumi with the name of Mesnevi-i Manevi consists of about 26 thousand couplets and six books, and is one of the tremendous works that has been commented on very frequently throughout history. Many commentaries have been written for Mesnevi-i Manevi in various volumes from the past until our present day. However, the number of the works that comment on the whole of the six books of Mesnevi-i Manevi in a complete manner is very few. Although 749 years have passed over the writing of Mesnevi-i Manevi, which was first written between 1260-1267, the number of the Turkish commentaries that cover the whole of it is only six. On the other hand, the number of the works in which a part of Mesnevi-i Manevi is commented or some selected parts from it are paraphrased is over forty. In this paper, firstly, we will try to determine and collect the commentaries on Mesnevi-i Manevi of Rumi. As a second item, we will try to make a classification of the Turkish Commentaries of Mesnevi. There is a classification of the Mesnevi-i Manevi of Rumi that was made before. In this paper, we would like to make a recommendation for the classification of the Turkish commentaries of Mesnevi by considering the previous classification studies that were conducted before us. In history, not every commentator has been able to paraphrase the whole of the Mesnevi, which is an extremely sizable work. However, there are many commentators who have paraphrased on a part of Mesnevi or on some selected parts of it. Although the commentators, who paraphrased on a part of Mesnevi, started their work with the intention of paraphrasing the whole of it, they were not able to fulfill their goals for various reasons; and sometimes they paraphrased only one volume of it or a part of it depending on their needs. In the commentaries that were written by electing from the Mesnevi, the commentators paraphrased some of the couplets taken from a part or from various parts of the six volumes of Mesnevi. Some other commentators, on the other hand, paraphrased the couplets that were formed by Yusuf-u Sinecak by selecting some couplets from the Mesnevi from his work named Cezire-i Mesnevi. In this study, we will try to classify the commentaries of Mesnevi by considering their similar and different sides under various titles.
