Levirate Marriages in Judaism: The Women were Held Captive by Custom


Levirate marriage, according to the codes of Judaism, is a type of marriage in which the brother of a deceased man is obliged to marry his brother's widow, and the widow is obliged to marry her deceased husband's brother. Levirate, a practice applied as a tradition in the early periods of Bene Israel, became a binding law after the rearrangements carried out in the time of Moses. This type of marriage is still a hot topic today, most widely discussed all through the history of Judaism as well. In this presentation the roots, religious and traditional bases, the reasons behind levirate marriages will be discussed along with economic, social and psychological consequences. The approaches adopted by the Jewish denominations towards levirate marriages from the past till today will be evaluated, too. Being the first example, Tamar, the bride of Judah told in the Genesis, will be analysed in this study.
