Kadın eğitiminin devrin beklenen ve özlenen değişiminin en önemli basamağı olduğunu fark eden Mithat Efendi, bu eğitimin hangi yönde olması gerektiği konusunda da görüş sahibidir. Bunun için daima bir ‘rehber’ kimliğiyle hareket eder, tavsiyelerine uyulması ya da uyulmaması durumunda ortaya çıkabilecek olumlu ve olumsuz sonuçları anlatır. Mithat Efendi’nin kendini rehber olarak görevlendirdiği başlıklar arasında kadınların yazı faaliyetleri de vardır. Yazdıklarıyla kadınların edebiyattaki yerlerini ve yollarını belirlemeye çalışır. Herkesin itibar ettiği ve görüşlerine güvendiği bir ‘hoca’ olarak kadınları ellerinden tutar, onları edebiyat dünyasına tanıtır, karşılaştıkları sorunları aşmalarında yardımcı olur ve bir ‘akıl hocası’ gibi sorumluluk içerisinde hareket eder. Ahmet Mithat’ın kalem faaliyeti sadece roman, hikâye ve tiyatro gibi sanat eserleri ve gazete yazılarıyla sınırlı değildir. O, aynı zamanda mektuplarıyla da bir yazı faaliyetini sürdürür ve etki alanını bu anlamda özel yazışmalarla daha da derinleştirir. Mithat Efendi’nin mektupları, kadın - edebiyat ilişkileri konusundaki birçok görüşünü daha samimi bir dille ifade ettiği metinlerdir. Kadınlar ve onların edebiyattaki yerlerini belirlemesi bakımından Fatma Aliye Hanım, Şair Nigâr Hanım ve Şair Fitnat Hanım’a yazdığı mektuplar konuyla ilgili önemli bir içeriği taşırlar. Bu görüşlerin en dikkat çekici olanlarından biri, Mithat Efendi’nin kadınları şiirden uzak tutmaya ve şiir yazmalarını engellemeye çalışmasıdır. Şiirin yaygın kabul gördüğü, ‘edib’ sıfatını almak için neredeyse şiir yazmanın şart olduğu bir geleneğin içinde bu farklı bir tavırdır. Bu makalede Mithat Efendi’nin kadın yazarlara yazdığı mektuplardan yola çıkılarak kadınlar ve şiir konusundaki görüşleriyle romana yönlendirmenin sebepleri üzerinde düşünülecektir. Mithat Efendi ve devir edebiyatının karakteri üzerinden bakılarak bunların sebepleri konusunda yorumlar yapılacaktır.

Ahmet Mithat Efendi who realized that educating women is the most important step of the expected and long-awaited change of the era, holds a view on how this education should be directed. For this reason he always goes by ‘guide’ identity, expresses positive and negative consequences as results of obeying or disobeying his advices. Writing activity of women is among the topics on which Ahmet Mithat Efendi places himself as a guide. Through his writings he tries to identify position and paths of women in literature. He takes women by the hand as a reliable and credited ‘teacher’, presents them to the world of literature, helps them to overcome the problems they come across with and behaves in a suitable way for a ‘mentor’. Ahmet Mithat’s writing activities are not limited only to art works such as novel, short story and plays or newspaper articles. He maintains another writing activity through his letters and deepens his domain via private correspondence. Letters of Ahmet Mithat Efendi are the texts that state his views on the relationship between women and literature in a more sincere way. His letters to Fatma Aliye Hanım, Şair (Poet) Nigâr Hanım and Şair (Poet) Fitnat Hanım contain an important content in terms of women and designating their position in literature. One of the most striking views is that Ahmet Mithat tries to keep women out of poetry and writing poetry. This is a different attitude in an environment that poetry is widely accepted and requires producing poetry to attain the epithet ‘man of letters’. Ahmet Mithat Efendi offers trying another literary genre through which they can achieve self-realization. That is novel. In this paper by looking at the letters Ahmet Mithat Efendi wrote to women we will think on the reasons for guiding woman to novel and his thoughts on poetry. Comments on the causes will be done through looking at Mithat Efendi and literary character of the age.
