The Teaching of Prefix-Verbes in German as a Foreign Language

Considering word formation, German is one of the richest languages in the world. In the German language prefixed verbs are formed from nouns, adjectives and verb roots. Prefixes hold an important role in verb formation. Therefore, German word structure and especially prefixed verbs are important in German language teaching. This issue influences vocabulary knowledge in language learning and effective language use. In the German language, phonetically, morphologically, syntactically and semantically different and new verbs can be formed from root-verbs through separable, inseparable, and both separable and inseparable prefix use. However, in the Turkish language some linguists deny even the existence of prefixes and the linguists who do not deny but admit to them refer to them as rare. In the Turkish language, noun and adjective formation with prefixes are more frequent and rare verb formations with prefixes are simpler than verb formations with prefixes in the German language. It is necessary to make this issue clear for both the language learner and the language educator. This study handles prefixed verbs from various perspectives e.g. an example of a complex structure in the German language is the use of prefixes with verbs at the end of sentences. This feature is an unfamiliar and difficult issue for Turkish learners of the German language. In particular, both separable and in-separable prefixes have morphological, syntactic and semantic variations and these variations determine the criteria for separableness. These criteria affect each other in terms of the prefix’s separableness. The semantic variation of a prefixed verb is the basic factor determining the stress of the prefix. Therefore, considering all these factors, this study connects the research conducted on prefixes to their lexical aspects (Aktionsarten).
