Gerundials In Leyli vü Mecnun by Ali Şir Nevai


Leyli vü Mecnun is one of the masnavis composing Hamse of Ali Şir Nevâyi who turned Chagatai into classical literatüre language in fifteenth century.Supposed to be written in 1484,Leyli vü Mecnun has all the characteristics of the era.This work which was written in relation to Nizami and Emir Hüsrev’s masnavis which have the same title like this work ,constitutes thirty-eight chapters.In each chapter,there are totally three-thousand-six hundred twenty two couplets.There are sixteen versions of the same work only in Turkey libraries.In addition, there are also other versions in Tashkent,Leningrad,Paris and London.In this paper,we aim to analyze gerundials in Leyli vü Mecnun.Gerundials are grammatical elements which are used to enrich statements and expression ,to express statements in short,to form subclauses,to substitute conjunctions.They do not show all the characteristics of verbs although they are generated form verbs.They carry some aspects of adjectives,adverbs and nouns.They are
