An Analysis of Verbal Adjective Use in Pre-School Context

A certain set of grammar systems in a particular language could be difficult to acquire with respect to other languages. One such system, relative clauses are among the frequently investigated grammatical constructs whose form and acquisition time could vary from one language to the other. Arising from this, it has been one of the hot issues on the part of the researchers in first language acquisition. Chomsky (1986) states all natural human languages share universal properties while specific parameters peculiar to languages are available, too. Demirci (2010) argues the principles and parameters form the basis of the separation between surface and deep structure in Chomsky’s generative grammar theory. One of these parameters, the relative clause is marked with various special particles following to the verb in Turkish. Slobin (1982) indicates that Turkish children acquire the relative clauses later than their English peers. Although all natural human languages derive from a deep structure, the timing difference in acquisition on the part of the parameters is an issue of concern. In this respect, based on the pre-school children’s narration of picture books, the present study aims to examine the differences between 4- and 5- year-olds with regard to their use of relative clauses. The data were obtained in cooperation with the children’s teacher and recorded. The study revealed that older children made use of subject relativization with more complex combinations of items while not uttering any object relativization.
