One might thought that the word “paso”, which is widely used especially among youngsters as a durative marker, is a borrowing in Turkish. However, to consider about the etymology of a word, only phonological knowledge and/or intuition may not be enough. It is essential to have a scientific profundity which can conduct an in-depth etymologic research and diachronic language culture. It may be thought that word “paso”, which has been used by young generation increasingly, is a borrowing from a foreign language as it contradicts the phonological rules of Turkish. According to dictionaries, the word “paso” is borrowed from Italian or from the French verb “passe” (= to pass). However, “paso” is used, to mean “continuously, non-stop” so that this explanation may be insufficient. It is not only used as “paso” it also has allomorphs such as “basa or pasa”. Morphophonological changes, which occur in a language, are related to time rather than origin. In Turkish, in durative aspect beside adverbs “pasa, basa, paso” auxiliary verbs “yorı-, dur-” are morphemes used as durative markers. In conclusion, according to our lexicology studies and dialect compilations “basa” or “pasa”, which are archaic words in Turkish, can be considered as allomorphs of current “paso” as a result of morphophonemic processes.
