Historical Development, Structural Principals and Attendant Problems of the Industry in Çaycuma District


Industrial activities in Çaycuma District have a long past which is dating back to 1950es. The company Filyos Ateş Tuğla has been established in 1949 in the town of Filyos (which is a sequel of an antique settlement at the same time) made Filyos and kept it as the most important residential of the District until 1965. Later on, the establishment of companies like Çaycuma Süt (milk manufacturing) and Yurtbay Tuğla (brick factory) in 1955 in the Center of Çaycuma District and Seka Kağıt ve Selüloz Fabrikası (paper and cellulose factory) in 1970, contributed to the regional upswing and the rise of population density. As a result, Çaycuma left Filyos behind on population base, crossed the threshold of 10,000 in 1985. Afterwards, affected by the changes in the industrial, the commercial and the service sector, the population number showed a rise up to 30,000. Industry has an important place amongst economic activities. 42,4 % of the active population is been employed in the industry sector. There are 43 industrial plants nowadays, working in seven different sectors within the territory of the District. İndustrial manufacturing zones are commonly concentrated around “Aşağı Filyos Vadi Tabanı” (downside the Filyos Valley). Components like the highway, airway and seaway transport; the closeness to big market areas; having lands suitable for setting up production facilities and public support; put industrialization in Çaycuma forward. When the Project “Filyos Vadi Projesi” realizes, industry will much more come into prominence. In this study; the historical development, structural basis and the available issues about Çaycuma District’s industrial manufacture have been examined and the identified problems have been tried to be solved within a geographical perspective.
