We can simply define imperialism as the extension of a nation’s authority by territorial acquisition or by the establishment of economic, political and cultural dominance over other nations. It derives from the Latin word “imperare” meaning “to command”. Although there are some similarities between imperialism and colonialism, imperialism differs from colonialism in that it does not have to be bound up with geographical area. Imperialism has always been used to describe the political and economic dominance of the West in Asia and Africa. The West has employed imperialist practices sometimes by violent or sometimes by showing its smilling face. The modern-day imperialism continues its existence by changing its form. Today, imperialist nations do not need to invade a territory. With the means of transportation and communication, anywhere in the world can be reached in a very short time. In this paper, we have studied the strategies that imperialist nations have pursued to reach their goals depicted in the film of Avatar. A 2009 American epic science fiction film Avatar has received considerable attention due to both the technology used and the narrative style of imperialist practices. Indeed, we see striking examples of imperialist practices in the film.
