Ahmet Mithat Efendi’den sonra kırk bir romanı ile Türk edebiyatının “velud” yazarlarından birisi olarak anılmayı hak eden Hüseyin Rahmi Gürpınar, sadece bu niteliği ile değil yarattığı tipler ve onları ete kemiğe büründürmede gösterdiği başarısı ile de edebiyatımızda önemli bir yere sahiptir. Romanlarındaki teknik hataları, benzer tematik konuları ele alışını bir tarafa bırakırsak kullandığı “mizah dili” ve anlaşılır Türkçesi ile Türk okuru tarafından sevilmiştir. Hiçbir edebi topluluğa bağlı kalmadan romanlarını yazan Hüseyin Rahmi’nin bu tavrı bilinçli bir tercihtir çünkü on dokuzuncu yüzyılın sonundan yirminci yüzyılın başına kadar yaşayan romancı ister istemez farklı edebi toplulukları görmüştür. Ayrıca bir kültür değişimine de tanık olmuştur. Bu açıdan eserlerindeki zihniyet değişimini romanlarında görebilmek mümkündür. İncelememizde ele alacağımız İffet romanı, romanın mukaddimesinde belirtildiği üzere “hakikiyun mesleği”ne tabii olarak yazılır. Yazar- anlatıcı tarafından aktarılan romanda İffet adlı fakir bir kızın acıklı hayat hikâyesini okuruz. Daha adından başlanılan kişileştirme yöntemiyle İffet’in saf ve temiz bir kız olduğu anlaşılır. İffet, içine kapanık, hassas ve hüzünlü bir kızdır. İffet’in hikâyesini anlatırken yazar- anlatıcı şiir alıntılarından faydalanma yoluna gider. Bu şiir alıntıları, romanın anlamına ve kurgusuna katkı sağlar. Hüseyin Rahmi, realist/natüralist bir çizgide romanlarını yazan ve bu amaçla kişilerini kendi sosyal çevresi içerisinde konuşturan bir romancıdır. İffet romanında da bu özelliğini korumuştur. Dahası İffet’in hüznü seven bir kız olduğunu evindeki levhaya işlediği şiir alıntısı ile vermeye çalışan yazar-anlatıcı, bu tavrı ile daha romanın başında İffet hakkında bize bir ipucu vermiş olur. Bu alıntı sadece onun hüznünü değil estetik bir zevke ve kültürel bir birikime de sahip olduğu bilgisini bize verir. Bu açıdan anlama katkı sağlar. Aynı şekilde yazar- anlatıcıda onun hakkında bir merak duygusu da oluşturduğundan evlerine doktor arkadaşı ile gidip gelmesine ve onun hakkında bilgi edinmesine ve böylece romanın yazılmasına neden olarak kurguya katkı sağlar. Onun eğitiminden bahsedilirken Victor Hugo’nun Angelo piyesinde geçen bir şiiri ezberlediği ve Türkçeye aktardığı bilgisi verilir. Bu şiir hem Fransızca aslıyla alıntılanır hem de İffet tarafından yapıldığı belirtilen Türkçe çevirisi verilir. Bu şiir alıntısı, İffet’in eğitim seviyesini gösterdiği gibi onun ne tarz şiirleri okuduğu bilgisini de verir. İffet’in ölümünden sonra onun günlüğünden kalan kâğıtları Latif almıştır. Yazar- anlatıcı, bu kâğıtları alabilmek için Latif’in ruh haline uygun şiirler okur. Bu şiirler, sayesinde Latif kâğıtları yazar- anlatıcıya vermeye ikna olur. Bu kâğıtları okuyan yazar- anlatıcı İffet’in hissettikleri ve kişiliği hakkında bir bilgiye ulaşır ve böylece onun romanını yazar. Bu açından yazar- anlatıcının okuduğu şiirler romanın anlamına ve kurgusuna katkı sağlarlar. Mezar taşlarının üzerindeki şiirler ise hüzünlü ve dünyanın geçiciliğini anımsatan bir atmosfer yarattıkları için önemlidir. Bu şiirler sadece bize ölümü çağrıştırmazlar, ayrıca yazar-anlatıcının ve doktor arkadaşının ilerleye ilerleye İffet’in mezarına yaklaşmalarına ve onun da öldüğünü öğrenmelerine neden olurlar. Bu açıdan romanın ilerleyişi açısından önemlidirler. Dahası onların bu vesile ile İffet’in öldüğünü öğrenmeleri mezar taşlarında yazılı olan şiir parçalarındaki gibi ölümün acımasızlığının daha net anlaşılmasını sağlar. İffet romanında Lamartine’e atıf yapılarak onun gibi yetenekli bir şairin bile hisleri anlatmakta yirmi dokuz harfin yetersiz kaldığını söylemesi önemli bir ayrıntıdır. Çünkü yazar- anlatıcı, İffet’in Latif’e duyduğu aşkı anlatamaz ve İffet’in hislerinin yoğunluğunu Lamartine’den alıntıladığı bir sözle vermeye çalışır. Hüseyin Rahmi Gürpınar deserves to be called as one of the most productive novelist in Turkish Literature with his forty one novels. Not only his productivity but also his creativity and success in depicting characters in his novels puts him in a special place in Turkish Literary. If we put the technical problems and use of similar thematic areas in his novels aside, clarity and humorous writing style of his novels made him to be loved by the public. He consciously did not adhere to any literary movement as a novelist even tough many novelists were affected by many different literary movements from the end of 19th century to the beginning of 20th century. In addition to that, there was a cultural transformation in this period as well. In this regard, the change in the mentality can be clearly observed in his novels. His novel ‘Iffet’, which is the subject of this study, is written in ‘hakikiyun meslegi’ style as described in the foreword of the novel. In this novel unfortunate story of a poor girl named Iffet is portrayed by the narrator. It is clear that the use of personification method starts with name Iffet, which was chosen to describe pure and clear nature of the girl. She is an introvert, sensitive and depressed girl. Narrator uses quotes from poetry in order to portray her story and these quotes enrich the context and the fiction of the novel. They also depict the well-educated and sensitive nature of Iffet. Furthermore, they are used as a way of creating an atmosphere. The poems from headstones are particularly to serve this purpose in the novel. Hüseyin Rahmi is a novelist who writes on realist/naturalist topics and draws his characters out on his social frame. He uses this aspect in İffet as well. Furthermore, he depicts İffet’s gloomy side by the poem quote included in the panel at her home and by doing this he provides a clue about İffet. This quote shows the reader not only her gloomy side but also her taste in aesthetics and culture. Thus, it contributes to the context of the novel. Similarly, writer-narrator is troubled about İffet’s life after seeing this poem and he frequently visits her house with his doctor friend. Thus, he becomes curious about her life and gathers a lot of information about her as the doctor visits İffet’s sick mother. While mentioning her educational background narrator informs us that she has learnt a poem from Victor Hugo’s Angelo play by heart and even translated it to Turkish. This poem is quoted in its original form-French and İffet’s translation is also provided. This quotation not only shows İffet’s education level but also which type of poetry she reads. After İffet’s death Latif acquires pieces from her diary. In order to get these pieces writer-narrator reads poems according to Latif’s psychological state. Latif is convinced to give the pieces thanks to these poems. In this regard, the poems enrich the context and fiction of the text. The poems written on the headstones are also important to depict the sorrowful and temporary nature of the life on earth. These poems does not bring the death to mind but tells the journey of doctor and writer-narrator to İffet’s grave and how they learn about İffet’s death. Therefore, they are important for the progression of the story. Moreover, their journey to İffet’s grave and her death makes inhuman nature of death clearer as it is pictured in poems written of the headstones. Quoting Lamartine and challenging how hard it is to explain the feelings by the alphabet even for a talented poet like Lamartine in İffet is an important detail. Because, writer-narrator cannot explain İffet’s love towards Latif by his own words and uses a quote from Lamartine to explain intensity of her feelings. This show that writer-narrator feels that it is impossible to depict the emotional state of characters. This also indicates how writers from this era feels toward explaining the feelings of the characters and their feeling of inadequacy for depicting it i
