In this study, the demographical characteristics of the city of Turhal were examined. Thanks to its geographical position and particularly the state-funded economic investments, Turhal became a significant centre economically and socio-culturally and its population increased continuously by migrations till 2000s. In the republic period, the total population of Turhal was 17,958 with a population of sub-districts corresponding to 5,687 in 1935, the year when the first data regarding Turhal was obtained. In 2012, Turhal had a total population of 63,600 and accounted for 7% of the city population of the Central Black Sea Region and 18% of city population of Tokat. In the meantime, a balanced progress between economic development and population wasn’t achieved. Although Turhal was included in the incentive region, industry wasn’t developed sufficiently and unemployment problem emerged in the city. Therefore, Turhal has started emigrating since 2000. Considering the demographical characteristics of the city, four periods in which population variables became different were identified. Between 1945 and 1985 when the population was dynamic and showed fast increase, the city population increased by 7.4 times by migrations. In the period of 1985-2000, the population increase and growth rate dropped back compared to the previous period. After 2000, the negative values were seen in the city population. Despite the negative values seen in the population increase and growth rate, the city population constitutes 74% of the district population.
