A Milestone In Turkish Lexicography: “Misalli Büyük Türkçe Sözlük”

The dictionaries gathering the vocabulary of a language with a particular order are written to define the meanings of the words. On that sense the dictionaries have different types such as common dictionaries, customized dictionaries, monolingual and bilingual/ multilingual dictionaries. The lexicography in Turks began with “Dîvânü Lügati’t-Türk” written by Kaşgarlı Mahmud. With the reforms of Ottomon Empire, acceleration in Turkish Lexicography could be seen. Until “Lehçe-i Osmanî” was written by Ahmed Vefik Paşa, no other dictionaries, in which Turkish words are used as lexical entries, were encountered. Many Turkish dictionaries were written until today originating from the works of Ahmed Vefik Paşa. Among these works, Kamus-ı Türkî, written by Şemseddin Sami, ignores the principles of modern lexicography except the “Turkish Dictionary” and “Meydan Larousse” prepared by Turkish Language Society with an almost seventy – two- year experience. When Misalli Büyük Türkçe Sözlük, which is a product of more than three decades’ hard work from 1972 to 2005, is assessed from different perspectives, it will be clear that it is the most excellent dictionary of Turkish language until today. In the entry section of the work, basic concepts were defined and some dictionaries were introduced which were cornerstones in Turkish Lexicography. The evaluation section begins with a short presentation of Misalli Büyük Türkçe Sözlük and the dictionary is assessed with twenty headings with a content of how to choose and prepare a scientific, well based dictionary. In this assessment, sample entries were chosen partly and shown as charts related with the topic. In conclusion part, it is explained that from which aspects this dictionary break grounds in Turkish Lexicography.
