The Kyrgyz Translations Of The Holy Quran

The translation of Islamic thought was a necessity for the mass of people who embraced Islam and didn’t know the Arabic language. The Quran was the basis of this fact. For the Muslims whom their mother tongue wasn’t Arabic, was very difficult to grasp the meaning of the Quran. When the Quran had been translated to their own language, they could understand it. This sacred text firstly had been translated to Persian, in the time Emir Mansur b. Nuh from Samanoğulları. The tafsir translated to Persian is the one that which was written in Arabic by Muhammed b. Cerir-i Taberî. This tafsir was shortened and based on the text of the Quran and then translated to Persian between lines. Islam as a state religion is accepted by the Turks, in the tenth century was the time of Karahanids. Turks who translated all the texts of religions they accepted, after being Muslim they began to translate the Quran that is the main source of this religion into their own language. Although to say about anything about the interpreter and the date of the first translation of the Koran into Turkish is imposible, it can be said that the first Persian translation constitutes a model for the Turkish translation. Kyrgyz translations of the Holy Quran are not available befor entering to the Soviet Union. After the loss of independence Kyrgyzstan has been informed about Islamic studies by Russian literature. The majority of the Quran translations in this period, without regard to the original text, are the translations of Western languages, especially French to the Russian. Two Russian translations of the Quran which are based on Arabic text are successful than previous ones. First of them is translated by well-known Russian orientalist G.S. Sablukov and the second is translated by İ. Y. Kraçkovski. After gaining independence in 1991, Kyrgyzstan has manifested a strong tendency toward religion and Holy Quran in the same year, have been translated from Russian to the Kyrgyz by Ernis Tursunov. In this study, Kyrgyz translations of the Holy Quran will be presented in the chronological order.
