Making Supra-segmental Units Visible for the Correct Pronunciation of Homonymic Words in Teaching Turkish to Foreigners

Homonymic words in Turkish, most of the time cannot be perceived and pronounced correctly by foreign students. In order for Turkish-learning foreigners to recognise the meaning-diacritic features of supra-segmental units such as accent, intonation, tune, duration, and caesura, the differences that occur during the pronunciation of words need to be made visible. The aim of this work is to identify the differences of some homonymic words in Turkish in terms of supra-segmental units; and in line with these differences, to emphasise the significance of making supra-segmental units visible in achieving correct pronunciation. Making supra-segmental units visible in silico in teaching Turkish to foreigners will contribute to the skills of speaking correctly and eloquently as well as oral reading of students. This work was conducted by the depictive method, which examines incidents and phenomena in their natural conditions. The data was acquired from some homonymic words in TDK Audio Turkish Dictionary as well as oral reading of some homonymic words within sentences by 5 experts in Turkish teaching and recording of the reading by a recorder. The data recorded by the recorder was analysed with Praat 5.3.56 programme. The statistical method was used in the evaluation of the results of the analysis. As a result, it became clear that accents of homonymic words in Turkish are different from each other; it is possible to observe accent differences of homonymic words within a context, which do not have any accent differences in terms of lexeme; it is necessary and has a great significance to have foreigners make accent practices by making supra-segmental units such as accent, intonation, tune, duration, limit and caesura visible in silico, in achieving the correct pronunciation of homonymic words in oral reading and speaking skills.
