Traces Of The Old Turkish In Dede Korkut Stories

Old Anatolian Turkish, which is the oldest written language of Oghuz, also serves as a bridge between Middle Turkish and Ottoman Turkish in terms of its phonetic features. Therefore, many components in Old Turkish and Middle Turkish in the period of Old Anatolian Turkish are found archaically. While some of these components continue in Ottoman Turkish and Turkey Turkish either in a similar way or with phonetic changes, some of them, especially in literary language, have fallen into disuse after this period. However, we should indicate that while some words or grammatical components have not been used in literary language after Old Anatolian Turkish, they have continued their existence in Anatolian folk accents. The studies made or to be made regarding to compile Anatolian folk accents are very important in revealing these hiding elements. The studies regarding to compiling of Anatolian folk accents are increasingly continuing at Turcology departments at many of our universities, and this gratifies us. The importance of Dede Korkut’s stories does not only depend on being a written literary work. Also, they have begun to come into existence in old-time and they have been transferred to the written language by being compiled from folk accents. Therefore, this work is more important than the other works of Old Anatolian Turkish in terms of hiding the archaic components.
