Analysis Essay Of Ferit Edgü’s Story “Bir Gemide” Acoordıng To Greimas’ Actants Model

The art of story is a form of narrative that is not independent from its creator, namely the narrator, and created within the theme fictionalized by its narrator. When the work is created, it is the reader’s turn to interpret and give meaning to it. The reader’s duty is to reinterpret, transform the structures in the text and themes as well as unveiling the meaning connections between those. Semiology derived from Ancient Greek word semeion meaning sign and logos meaning science is known as science of signs in Turkish. Two people should be mentioned as founders of Semiology. These are Charles Sanders Peirce and Swiss linguist Ferdinand de Saussure. Saying “Although the universe is not entirely made up of signs, it overflows with signs”, Peirce expresses that all objects can be subject of Semiology. The story of Ferid Edgü, “Bir Gemide”, was published in 1978. The text analysis method proposed by Greimas for semiological analysis was utilized in this story. A.J. Greimas argues that an incident starting the story and an element transforming the initial status are required for creating the narrative. During the analysis, semiology aims at clarifying the deep structure of the text through its surface structure. Within this analysis, some instruments are applied in order to reach at the meaning universe of the text. "Actants Model" of Greimas is based on the Principle of Opposites. It is widely acknowledged that this method is highly significant in story analysis and application of deep structure of text. After the segments in the story were determined, they were analyzed in terms of discourse and semantic levels. It is appreciated that this paper will shed light on successive researches.
